Hi, I’m Chris Reid
I’ve taught at secondary schools for 15 years. A question always bothered me. What happens to children’s curiosity? They arrive at age eleven full of questions. By fifteen, too many are silent and passive (in my lessons, at least).
So I started a PhD at King’s College London investigating what happens to that curiosity. Turns out they’re still as curious at 15 as they are age 10. They just don’t show it in school.
At The Curiosity Gap, I ask about things I took for granted when I started teaching: why do schools work the way they do? who benefits most from the status quo? what might we be losing through a relentless focus on exams?
If you’ve ever wondered why that spark goes out – and what we can do to keep it alive – this might be for you.
